Washington Update: Relations of the USA with Germany and the European Union. An – incomplete – assessment.

The transatlantic relations are currently at a low point. BGA-Partner, Jürgen Chrobog, provides a great overview over the fault lines of US-German relations.

In his analysis, he concludes that the answer for Europe to adress the transatlantic challenges has not changed: The solution for lies solely in the European Union. The agreement on the aid package to deal with the economic consequences of the pandemic shows what is possible – especially if France and Germany are united. The German EU Presidency and the Chairmanship of the UN Security Council from 1 July opens up new opportunities for shaping the future. Whatever the outcome of the upcoming presidential election in the USA might be: we might not reurn quickly to the golden times of past transatlantic relations even under a president Biden.
